Right on the “hype”

Posted: August 27th, 2006 | Author: dotblack | Filed under: Tech, UAE | 6 Comments »

ACN features an article titled Beneath the hype. The article takes the whole Web2.0, AJaX, and the Mashups hype and gives examples of who’s using AJaX and how the semantic web and location sensitive applications are going to change the world. Where were you all this time?

AJaX, AJaX, and AJaX

I’m ashamed to even talk about it. I won’t say anything just take this quote from the article and digest it yourself.

Cryer: Contax aims to be one step ahead of the game with early Ajax adoption.

Knowing that AJaX is a technique and it is actually mentioned in the article:

Ajax is a collection of techniques that web developers use to deliver an enhanced user experience in the confines of a modern browser.

Does it hold? Adopting a technology or a set of techniques could get an organization the edge. Very obvious. But getting something that has been there for more than 2 years and use it is not having an edge! AJaX for most is nothing but the addition of XMLHTTPRequest object to client-side Javascript. And we all know that! Now you want to market your products with a new tag? Cryer?

If it’s about the interface and the responsiveness of applications, then Flash has always been there and even supported HTTPRequest since version 4.0(that’s 4 years ago!) and it’s player peneteration has always been above 90% of users. Read my AJaX vs. Flash if need more info on that.

Shame, Shame, Shame on you!

eVentures, Emirates’ software development arm, has also used Ajax for its ground-breaking web hotel-booking system for tour operators.

I’m happy this has happened, but is it really worth mentioning? If this is such a cool internal app, good for them. Are they giving up knowledge and sharing something? Are they sharing APIs and Web services? or do they share a framework they’ve developed?

If worse comes to worse, and this is a market status and how the implementors think and reveal information then we’re in a sorry region!

Mashups and Social Networking

Social services such as Flickr, YouTube, and MySpace are all blocked by the only ISP available in U.A.E. So what are you really talking about?

Once again, Web services have been around for a long long time. But now that it’s called Mashup and API sharing with XML RPCs is something big. How many tags/buzzwords could clients afford?

Spraying Jargons and cool-guy words

Pushing envlopes using buzzwords won’t get us anywhere but to dictionary!

It’s going to look ugly if I keep on quoting the whole article and comment on. It’s shamefull. It is.

Microsites: Camry 2007 & VW Rabbit

Posted: August 26th, 2006 | Author: dotblack | Filed under: Micro-Sites, Web-Design | 5 Comments »

You might not be a Toyota Camry fan, but the 2007 model is just off the hook. It’s elegant, very dynamic and simply looks good. Well this ain’t no review of the car but the microsite. Long time no microsite so I thought of giving you two of them. Toyota Camry 2007 and VW Rabbit 2007 microsites.

Once again, a gray based platform. Camry '07 MicrositeIt’s proven to be the right platform for metalic objects and specially cars, indeed. Camry ‘07 microsite brings in the old tricks in having you playing a nice little game while loading the movies. It’s clean, nice and easy to use microsite. While it has nothing so exciting it’s a real microsite that does the job, nothing so creative but the express!

You might like this oneVW Rabbit '07, VW Rabbit ‘07 microsite, while I don’t like VW cars at all, this microsite is catchy. Again the gray platform with scattering blury mesh that is accompanied with the beautiful tone of green for typography. Same ol’ same tricks for changing vehicle color and viewing interiors and exteriors. Again, nothing new, just clean and nice.

The gray platform, isn’t it really beautifull?

In search for YouTube

Posted: August 24th, 2006 | Author: dotblack | Filed under: Tech, UAE | Comments Off

A month ago Etisalat blocked YouTube. You remember that. Ever since then the site has been a target for YouTube lovers who land on the YouTube blocked by etisalat page. It’s a 2000+ visitors who tried google for that with search queries as weired as it gets.

Looking for answers

The majority of the searched keywords include “Why Etisalat Block YouTube”. And the rest who don’t care why and when are searching with “How to access YouTube from UAE“. And the list goes on.

As for Why, 7days published an article on the matter and discussed it with Etisalat. Check it out if you were looking for the answer.

If you’re looking for a solution, I wouldn’t even recommend breaking prockcies(intentionally misspelled, you know why ;) ). Just get yourself geared up with another service of likes of GoogleVideo or if you had a ton of videos uploaded to YouTube then contact their support e-mail and discuss how you could get them delivered to you.

Announcement: Still here

Posted: August 21st, 2006 | Author: dotblack | Filed under: Personal, Site-News | 3 Comments »

First, my apologies to my loyal readers who still kept my RSS feed burning even though I’ve been quiet for some time. Well, to be honest I’ve been in a state where writing would be just a wrong thing to do. For those of you who are subscribed to dotShow, another apology for missing this week’s episode.

How do I look like now?

Or rather what’s my mind state? It’s so messed up. I took a career decision where I don’t know if I took the right one. Way under my skillset and waaay under my experience. But I still took it for several reasons and dropped my own start-up idea and company. And the chaos in my mind is something visually spoken as:

Chaos

For all of you who e-mailed me to ask about the blog state and dotShow recorded reports and why they’re not produced yet, I’m getting back at it comming next week. Once again, I’m lucky to have you as my loyal readers. Be back soon.

Episode #4: We need magazines!

Posted: August 5th, 2006 | Author: dotblack | Filed under: UAE, dotShow | 4 Comments »

An insight on the need for home grown magazines in the Middle East.

Designers, Artists, and in general technologists need better magazines that come form the region for the region. Juniors and new entrants need better support and encouragement. Yea, we are deeply in need for real magazines that actual techies write in it, not just a bunch of editors who pickup stories from other sources. We need real web techies to talk about the web, real designers showcasing and highliting an individual’s work and judge. No editors, please.

Tune in and listen to the show. Please leave your feedback which is a key point about tech/art publishings in the Middle Eeast.
