Music while working?

Posted: December 3rd, 2006 | Author: dotblack | Filed under: Personal, Tech | 6 Comments »

I usually have my Winamp on, I keep on listening to music while I’m at my desk. But what kind of music suits your work envirionment? Or better put, what type of work would take music and what type wouldn’t? I can’t listen to music while I’m designing not even jazz or ballad, it just doesn’t work. But I could listen to whatever while I’m coding/programming. I’d enjoy listening to blues and jazz when i’m biting on my e-mails and reverting back. I could listen to Hiphop, rock, and even electro when I’m documenting or writing a piece of copy.

I know it depends on the mood, the time, etc… but what kind of work takes what kind of music for you? And how’d you like to listen to music while working? Using speakers or just the headphones? Are you allowed to listen to musc at work or you’re forced to listen to music due to the crowded office that you’re in?

Don’t just read this one, please comment and share.

I’m on Red Hot Chili Peppers – Hump De Bump now.

Ok, I’m listening to one hell of an addictive song while I’m writing this: No Other Way by blur.

I’m a wanna-be musician, so I can’t spend a second without music, or at least some sort of rhythm; I even try to time my steps when I’m walking so they go along with the tune stuck in my head. (By the way, No Other Way is great for walking).

My listening patterns are pretty simple:

    – Jazz, Blues, Swing when my coding requires thinking.

    – Progressive metal, rock and fusion when I’m plumping code, or doing sysadmin tasks.

Music plays a big role in setting my mood throuout the day, I can’t start my day w/o music nor end it without music. My work on my desk is usually emails/spreadsheets/word files and powerpoints so I could listen to any type of music I like. i prefer listening to anything that i would have access to but phonecalls have to always cut the buzz.

I don’t listen to music while at work! I can’t, coz I think its not a good idea to carry an i-pod when you are working in a close-knit team, especially which engages in short discussions every now and then…But I do miss listening to music otherwise at work…all I do for now is sing/hum to myself and occasionally tap my fingers on the table as a workaround… :D

On another note, I discussed this on a launch with a couple of friends, well, it felt awkward since one of them works as a resident DJ for a club, it’s his job to listen to music, isn’t that so cool? On the contrary, the other is a lawyer and thinking of listening to music was out of question. It’s getting weireder and weirder isn’t it?
